Cheung Chau Bun Festival and Mother's Day Cats

Cheung Chau Bun Festival
Saturday May 2nd was the annual Bun Festival on Cheung Chau island and this year, we braved the crowds and decided to go.

Cheung Chau is a small fishing island/village a short ferry ride away from Central Hong Kong.







Parade
On Saturday, they have the big parade and the tiny island is packed with thousands of people.





In the parade, other than lion dances and lots of drums and people carrying banners, the highlight is the little kids who appear to be floating over the crowds.




















Bun Towers
At midnight, they have the annual bun tower climbing contest.

These towers are completely covered with edible buns.

People strapped with mountain climbing gear race to the top in a contest to collect the most in the shortest amount of time. Then they distribute to the crowds. We didn't stay for the tower climbing.






San Francisco Visitor
Earlier in the week, I had a visitor from San Francisco who is with the HQ of International Association of Business Communicators, IABC (I'm on the board of the HK Chapter) and so for some fun, Mark and I took her to Cheung Chau for dinner and the pre-festival festivities.



Momma Cat and Babies
On Sunday, I received an emergency request to take in a momma cat from HK Alley Cat Rescue who had just given birth on Saturday. She had been picked up by HK Alley Cat Rescue from Animal Control just a few days earlier and good thing she was. She and her 3 babies now live in our computer room.

She is one of the sweetest cats we've ever fostered and she was obviously a pet to someone before but no microchip or collar, both of which are law.

Dandy and Bailey
Dandy is acting pretty darn healthy.

He and Bailey are now partners in crime begging for food, begging for walks and running to the door barking when we get home.

He does have some bad days where he needs extra doses of pain meds, otherwise he gets very kujo-ish, but those days are not as common as the happy days.
