It's 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6th and I'm supposed to be flying to Taiwan at 9:00 for some factory visits for work, but a level 8 typhoon signal was just raised in Hong Kong so it looks like I'm not going anywhere. The airlines don't even open their phone lines until 7:00 but all signs point to everything being closed at least for the 1st part of today. It's funny the typhoon signals here because after 2 years in Hong Kong, I've yet to see weather any worse than a windy day in Troutdale, Oregon. Actually, the outer areas of Hong Kong get stronger wind than the central area where we live so I don't really get to see the strong stuff. Trees are getting ripped out in the New Territories and S. side of the island and sustained winds of 80mph. Kind of like downtown Portland is often mild weather compared to Troutdale, Oregon on a bad day. Here's the view from my apartment window right now. Looks like good jogging weather, so I'll take advantage of the free time and get some exercise done.
Next week, I'm supposed to go back to Taiwan to show some Australian clients around (weather permitting of course). The business meeting is Friday so I'm planning on staying the weekend and having Mark join me. Mark's never been to Taiwan and I've only been once, so it's worth checking out.
Here's a pic of the Taipei skyline and a map for all our USA friends back home who need a reminder where Taiwan is in relation to Hong Kong.
