July 1st was Hong Kong SAR day and we got another day off work. So nice. It was also the 10th anniversary of Britain's handover of Hong Kong to China so there was a lot of activity in the city during the weekend. The government staged a huge firework show to celebrate the anniversary and the locals staged lots of protest marches. Many of the local Hong Kong Chinese would rather Hong Kong still belong to Britain versus China, but it's all pretty peaceful stuff. Because Hong Kong is such a powerhouse of money, China has pretty much kept their nose out of things since the handover on July 1, 1997.
Mark and I celebrated the day with a dinner cruise on the harbor on a rented boat with friends sitting under a sky of fireworks. Almost felt like we were celebrating our American holiday the 4th of July.
Puppies and KittensWe've also had some drama with our foster kittens this past week.

One of them is quite sick and may not make it, but we're giving him a fighting chance (he's in the basket picture). He's about 1/2 the size of the other 2, had roundworms really bad, probably has ringworm and is losing his fur.

We've taken them all to the vet at SPCA and they pronounced the other 2 healthy but this poor little guy is struggling. We've got them separated now and the little guy is quarentined so we don't spread his infection. The other two kittens seem to be thriving though and love their new home in the computer room. They will make someone very sweet and cuddly pets.

On a positive note, our friends Laura and Richard adopted another dog this week. They were going to be foster parents for Hong Kong dog rescue, but fell in love with their first foster and are going got keep him. His name is Ralphie and he's about 3months old, and a rottweiler/doberman cross. I met Laura and the gang at the beach on Monday to meet the new baby and to let the dogs swim.

We met up with another couple who have a beagle we've been hearing about for a long time, and that just makes my day.
Which is cuter, the puppy or the beagle? Tough call. It really was a dog party with Ralphie, his sister Baz, the beagle named Borris and his mixed breed brother named Yeltsin (that's them swimming in the picture)
Unfortunately, Bailey couldn't go because even though it's been 6 months since her back surgery, she still tires out after 5 minutes of walking and her back legs start giving out so this day at the beach would've been too much for her. Poor Bailey.
