Bailey finds a friend

A few weeks ago, Laura, a co-worker of mine and her boyfriend Richard adopted a puppy at the local Hong Kong SPCA. Baz is a spunky 4 month old shepherd/chow mix and I've been in puppy heaven ever since. Last weekend, we brought Bailey over to their apartment for some playtime and we discovered Bailey has become a grumpy old girl and didn't have too much patience for Baz's playfulness at first. When we first arrived, Baz bounced all over her relentlessly in an effort to play and Bailey kept trying to get away. Bailey mellowed out a bit and Baz soon learned to bounce around Bailey instead of on top of her.

It was not just a week for puppies, it was a kitten week too. On my way back from lunch on Wednesday, I ran into two Chinese women holding a tiny orange and white tabby kitten who couldn't have been more than 3-4 weeks old. It was meowing and too cute to pass up. They told me they had just found the kitten in the park an hour earlier and asked if I wanted to have it. I immediately said yes, called Mark and started making mental plans for how to get the apartment set up for a kitten. As the sweet little kitten cuddled up into my neck, my logical side kicked in and I decided to wait a little longer before adopting another pet. Fortunately, the woman said her sister would adopt the cat if I didn't so I know it got a good home. Now I've signed up to be a foster for kittens from the local shelter much like we did in the USA. That way I get my kitten fix without the long-term commitment.

Mark gets some exercise

Last Sunday, I discovered an amazing hiking trail about 5 blocks from our apartment which takes you up into the green tropical hills of Hong Kong. I was shocked to find such greenery and openness so hear our apartment. Granted, the path is paved all the way up through the hills, but it winds about 10 km uphill over beautiful scenery and views. There's waterfalls, picnic areas, bbq pits and it's the land of off-leash dogs. (that's where they all hang out!) About 3 km into it, there's a stair climb of 599 steps called Jacob's Ladder, that's right, it says 599 on the sign leading to the walk, and it leads you to the prettiest 360 degree view of the island. When I got to the top, I was actually in the clouds and it was amazing. Last weekend, I power walked the whole thing myself and was so sore from the uphill climb that I couldn't walk well for 3 days. Today, Sunday, I decided to repeat the journey and this time Mark came with me. Now, he's so sore he's having a hard time standing up. Why do we do this to ourselves?
